Black Guard

for Half-Life

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

Dr. Eddy has been up to no good. To be honest, that seems like most scientists at Black Mesa.

You are part of the Black Guard, I suppose that’s like Black Shift, but maybe not.

Without warning, things really get crazy and you find yourself in the middle of it.

Do what BMRF has paid you to do: Kick some butt!

The Citizen Returns

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Set in both the heart and outside of City 17, “The Citizen Returns” contains the final chapters of our citizen’s story, as well as an updated version of Part II.

The story takes place shortly after a failed assassination attempt on Dr. Breen leads to the first ever use of the Overwatch Broadcast system by The Resistance, represented by former garage
owner Larry Soderstrom Jr.

The Combine forces decide to capture him and try to use his public repentance and execution as a means to appease the emergent rebellion.

The Citizens of City 17 however have other ideas in mind. Larry is now a symbol for the rebellion and a key asset in a bigger plot to deal a fatal blow to the Combine and its grip on humankind…

DiamondDogsVille

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

For this competition, entrants had to create an area from which the player must escape.

This “Escape” is most probably accomplished through the solving of some puzzle and/or combat.

The area can be a room, a series of rooms or even outside. The concept is that the player must find a way to move outside of the area.

I was hoping for some clever puzzles, hopefully environmental in nature and not some obscure and impossible to solve button pressing sequence.

This mod contains 3 official entries, one extra entry and a bonus map made over a longer time period.

Sector 6

for Half-Life

The helicopter drops you off and right into an ambush.

Get out and kill those soldiers, then work your way through the base.

Plant the C4 and hide behind the couch in the room nearby – THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT.

With luck, you will make it back out alive and back to another waiting helicopter.

Poll Question 294 – Do you think Valve made a mistake in making Gordon Silent?

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

There’s been some recent talk on Reddit about Gordon, specifically related to “Is anyone else annoyed by the level of undue praise in HL2?” and “The Success and Failure of Silence: Gordon Freeman in Half Life and Half Life 2”.

I mentioned the first thread on the May 2014 General Chat but I have wanted to re-start the Poll Questions for some time and this seems an interesting enough topic.

Clearly Gordon is “special”, both in terms of in-game and as a game character. Not speaking allows players to slip into his shoes more easily than if he spoke, but is that sort of wording just me regurgitating commonly held views?

How do women feel about playing as a man?

Is it really that important?

I think in the Second Unreal, the player is a woman and it didn’t make any difference at all for me.

Perhaps once we get into hardware that more completely immerses the player then it will matter, but not at the moment.

Thoughts and votes?

Animated Gif Competition

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

As a sort of gap-filler between RavenholmVille and the next mapping competition, I have decided to run a little Animated Gif competition.

There has been a resurgence in animated GIFs (the proper name is cinemagraphs) recently after some very artistic ones were created. Check out FastcoDesign and Hongkiat for more examples.

Viewers to my recent Twitch broadcast may have seen the one I created as the pre-stream image and I also created this one from an Episode Two background map.

Entrants must create an imaginative and subtle image that I will try and use in various places around the site, although I make no guarantee of that. I will try and create a page with all the entries, but again, I don’t guarantee it.

Please make your images as big as possible in terms of dimensions, as that gives me more possibilities for using them on the site.

They must be from any Half-Life game, i.e. Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Half-Life 2, Lost Coast, HL2: Episode One and HL2: Episode Two. No entries for other games, including Portal and Portal 2 will be considered.

Closing date for entries is 10:00 AM GMT Monday 19th May 2014 -that’s about 3 weeks.

Send you entries to me directly, [email protected] or host them somewhere and send me the link or post the link as a comment (remember, all comments with links are held in a queue – please do not try to subvert that process).

Winner will receive a $5 Steam game or something else if anybody wants to donate a prize.

As always, if you have any questions, just ask. Oh, and please tell as many people as possible, including tweeting, FB updates, Messages in bottles, carrier pigeons, smoke signals and graffiti.
