TREE: Blue Shift Podcast

10th March 2013

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

As part of the The Replay Experience Experiment, here is the third of a number of podcasts, discussing one of the games we have played.

In this case, it’s for Blue Shift. This time, Don hosts the podcast and I am the guest! Don is a modder with tremendous experience and has released a number of mods/maps including, Radix.

We discuss Blue Shift from a number of different aspects. I apologize for seemingly never stopping complaining about anything new.

Both Don and I will respond to any comments you may make, so please don’t hesitate to comment.

  1. What do you believe was the worst part about blueshift, Phillip? 🙂

    1. Well, putting aside the lack of anything new, which as was mentioned in the podcast, might not have been their fault, I would have to say the lack of “WOW” moments. Nothing really took my breath away and I feel there should be at least one of those pre game and preferably per mod.

What about you, what do you believe was the worst part about Blue Shift?

      1. While it was an enjoyable experience, I personally thought the worst part about it was, they didn’t really expand on the universe.

Half-life was a wonderful introduction to Black Mesa and Opposing Force brought us another side of Black Mesa that fleshed out the personality of the soldiers involved as well as introducing Race X and a plethora of new weapons and areas of the facility.

Blue Shift almost felt like an ambitious mod in some areas and didn’t really introduce anything new to the half-life canon. :/

  2. Another great podcast, I pretty much agreed on all points. I thought Don’s mapping perspective was interesting, I was wondering if you have done any work on Source engine? Good to hear that HL2 TREE is coming soon, although I have played most of it recently.

Thanks! I’ve really only dabbled a bit in Source mapping. I much prefer Goldsource, even given its age it can still impress. Also looking forward to HL2, I love the way it feels both familiar and brand new.

Hey, this was a really interesting podcast. I really liked the perspective of Phillip a a player/user and Don as both a player but also a level designer.

Look forward to listening to more, this was a really engaging and inspiring podcast especially for those learning level design/architecture such as myself.

Great work, glad to hear Phillip more too now Podcast17s not doing much (which I hope returns in the summer).
