Tired of hearing about mods that claim they are going to re-create the HL2 leaked beta? NO? Then is mod is absolutely, definitely, probably, maybe, possibly for you or maybe somebody you know, or a friend of somebody you know.
The first thing you need to realize about this mod is DON’T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! It’s laughing at other mods, so sit back, get a cool drink, a pair of very dark sunglasses and play until you drop.
- A completely mind blowing single player storyline, with fixed up maps from the leaked Half-Life 2 map pack.
- Hilarious and informative commentary nodes by the Checkerboarded Hopes 2 team.
- The Checkerboarded Hopes 2 Source engine is so well optimized that you can play it on a 486, no seriously.
- Real time ray tracing and radiosity simulation and other amazing stuff like that.
- Comes with its own scripting language, CB2Script which is based on UnrealScript.
- Two words: Halo dinosaurs.
- A 3 dimensional movement engine completely written from the ground up.
- In this game you can stand up, crouch, and prone, for absolutely no reason.
- A proprietary gamemode system called “shoot people and do stuff until you get to the end of the map.”
and more!!!!!!

So, you did read about not taking this mod seriously, didn’t you? Because if you approach this with some serious expectation you will be seriously disappointed. It’s poking fun at all those other mods that claim so much and deliver so little. That’s not to say that this mod doesn’t deliver fun it’s just a different kind of fun.
Visuals
Black and pink checkerboards. If you need me to tell you that then you haven’t been paying attention.
Gameplay
Shoot things. Really, that’s pretty much it. What more do you want?
Layout and Design
Up, down, left and right. In various combinations. Seriously, it’s just a few levels joined together.
Summary
I had fun playing it but felt the humor was lost, the Moddb page was funny than the mod itself. I would have preferred if the author built something serious but sometimes you just need to do something different.
I gave the mod only a Maybe recommendation because those checkerboards are just too different to be fun for too long.
I have no idea how you reach some of the levels because I just loaded them manually.
5 Words Or Less Review
AAARHHH! My eyes are bleeding!
I played this a while back and wasn’t sure that Phillip would want it at PP.
In the humorous mickey taking spirit of things I commented at the forum similar to this(saves having to type it out again):
Awesome, breathtaking, astonishing, beyond belief. Legendary for top notch combat gameplay.
The red colour for the ERROR signs was truly beautiful.
The enormity of imagination for the maps is transcendent.
Just a small quibble, I found the pink just a tad bright in the pink and black checkerboards – didn’t detract from the mod though.
Got a sense of humour? Is it fully engaged? Play it.
If not, do not.
If you do play and find that you have inadvertently smashed your screen with a sledgehammer or torn the tail off the dog – Don’t blame Phillip, He is the messenger, not the author.
Congratulations on finding the hidden map in Checkerboarded Hopes 2, you win the prize.
Prize?! Lovely.
That wiil be a huge fresh portion of cod please.
Just email it over.
I’m at the Forum. Just hit Jasper on the head, sorry thread.
This is an excellent example of purpose-driven modding. A guy sets out to make a mockery of modding and succeeds. This is the right direction guys, keep it up.
That said, I have to agree with Phillip that a more serious approach would have made this even MORE better. Making the checkerboards into a gameplay mechanic somehow would make this series highly unusual AND original.
How is this suppose to poke fun at other mods? Its not funny its just stupid.
No really, I can’t see what’s funny. May be nerd humor?
I’d rather hit my thumb with a Blair statement…..
i haven” t played this one, simply because I don’t own Hl1.
and I know it’s the rule here that you only add a comment when you first have played it, what is the right thing to do, don’t get me wrong. I fully agree with that.
still, I would like to comment on the red error words, and the purple and black blocked textures.
these aren’t made by the mapper. when you add a custom model to you’re map, and then don’t add the file of this model to the file structure, then you see the big red error word in the map. so all they did was adding a model when they made the map, and then left the model out.
same for those Black and pink checkerboards.
when you add a custom texture to you’re map, and then don’t add it to the folder structure, then the engine shows this highly bright purple black blocked “texture”, simply to tell you that you did forget to add it.
when that is fun, then I probebly have no feeling for fun at all. but I think it’s the maker who has a bad feeling for fun.
i think the maker isn’t able to make a well made map, or just didn’t want to put all the effort in it that is needed to make a well made map. and to overcome this he came up with this silly idea of telling that it;s ment as fun.
please, what a rubbish.
and what’s that with the “poke fun at other mods’, I simply don’t get it.
please feel free to delete this commnent of mine Phillip when you want because I didn’t play this one. I just wanted to explaine the red error word and the purple and black blocked textures.
that” all.

I just actually finally gave this mod a go yesterday for a quick distraction. While it’s nothing stunning, I enjoyed it for exactly what it was designed to be.
I played it, and there is some good gameplay in it, although this concept of taking the mickey out of modders is completely lost on me.
I do have a problem though – I got to the orange room with the overhead “error” conveyor, killed all the combine, switched off the turrets, and then what?
Can’t find a way forward! Clue anybody?
Couldn’t start the game. Got this Engine Error:
SetupArrayProps_R: Array prop'(null)” is at index zero
Any ideas?
