The training chapter of Half-Life: Blue Shift set in the Training Facility.

The “Black Mesa Hazard Course for Security Guard Training” trains the player to effectively use their uniform, how to move around and interact with the environment and how to use weapons.

Scientists (such as Rosenberg) can be seen watching the player during the training.

  1. If you have played Half-Life, which I hope you have, then this chapter is a simple reworking of its hazard course.

    Barney, I think, replaces Gina and any special routes have been removed, so there’s no exploring possible.

    There’s really nothing more to say.

    Hopefully others can point out the minor detail differences, but I can’t.

  2. NOTE: I am going to be playing Blue Shift on the WON version with the LD models, because why not.

    HAZARD COURSE
    A cool reworking of the HL1 Hazard Course that had enough changes to warrant a play.
    Differences with HL1 Hazard Course
    Barney is the instructor.
    An HEV charger was added where you were first shown the Health charger.
    You have to do 3 more jumps at the part with the jumping.
    No Long Jump module.
    No batteries at the flashlight part for obvious reasons.
    There is no HEV charger where the HEV charger was originally introduced.
    Your weapons are taken away in the elevator before the civilian section.
    You have to escort a scientist instead of a guard at the civilian section.
    Bugs and Glitches
    The Chrome on the Holo-Barney Helmet didn’t work.
    The scientist wouldn’t congratulate me after the ducking part. WHAT A DICK.
    The decals wouldn’t work, but that’s probably my renders fault.
    Floating lights.
    Etc.
    The LD models still had the HD vest and helmet.
    The rat at the shooting range can be gibbed into alien gibs.
    The reason why you couldn’t explore like Phillip said is because this Hazard Course is based off the Dreamcast Hazard Course which made it so you couldn’t fall off and die at parts.

  3. About Blue-Shift Hazard Course nothing particular to say. In fact we (re)discover that Hazard Course is only a training course.

    Consisting in the same one seen in HL1, BSHZ have only some littles differences :

    -No HEV or PCV, just a cop armor
    -Long jump removed and replaced by more jumps
    -Weapons seizure in the elevator
    -A gameplay automation, crouch-jumping by long press on jump key. However it had been removed at first upgrade.

    For resume it’s just the original Hazard Course adapted for Barney, poor in interest, for not saying superfluous.

    I will be playing the whole half life series (all my life 😀 ). From what I remember, you couldn’t fall on the water before the jumping part whereas in the original you could. Also the map is a bit different, the armor part, the hazards, no long jump.

    At the very least the target range should be modified for use with the glock handgun. We all know the barneys only used handguns so having a 9mmAR firing range was kinda weird (not to mention lazy)

    This chapter was a prime example of the developer going through the motions. Which is actually fine in this case, since anyone playing Blue Shift without playing Half-Life would really be the exception to the rule. They spent their time on the mapping and the scripting in the main game of Blue Shift, and were probably obligated to include this training course. Fine.

    I didn’t like playing this at all, it was Half-Life’s course but it felt dumbed down and I was kept on rails throughout.

    Thanks to the PP giveaway I’m able to participate in this part of the T.R.E.E. event!

    There are slight differences between the HL Hazard Course and the one here in Blue Shift. The one that most quickly springs to mind is the redesign of the 4 jumps room…watch me fail on the third jump repeatedly below in my LP of the Blue Shift Hazard Course.

    Total Playtime: 12:50 (Because this white dude could not land the third jump).

  8. The hazard course looks pretty much like the original one. Here are the differences:

    – Hologram is barney instead of Gina
    – You can’t fall in the water in most rooms
    – No long Jump
    – No HEV charger near the biohazards
    – You start with max suit power (grenade jumps :D)
    – HEV charger demonstration near health station
    – No batteries in flashlight area
    – Different floor when you get the “suit”
    – Jumps are shorter, but there are more of them.
    – No way to skip the elevator (No longjump)
    – No way to skip the water (No longjump)
    – The level transition box is smaller at the last elevator (can’t change maps from the outside D:)
    – You lose your weapons before entering civilian area (or at least you’re supposed to)
    – No barneys in civilian area (we’re a barney xD)
    – One more scientist in civilian area
    – No auto turrets in civilian area (even though the ceiling shows some, there are none)
    – Some different formulating of sentences (talks more like barney)
    – small fence at the end of the tram ride to prevent players from doing it on foot (I would have done one more grenade jump, but the need to jump on the track would have got me killed after)
    – Rosenberg is watching from one of the windows
    – Different scientists in windows
    – Small texture changes
    – I might have missed a few, anyone knows more?

    Overall this felt like an easy version of the hazard course

    Challenges:
    There are no challenges D:
    I did some stuff that could be challenges *hint hint*

    Five words or less review:
    was it always THAT easy?

    Deaths:
    I GUESS I could have died from too many grenade jumps, or standing in toxic waste for too long. seriously did anyone die?

    Playtime:
    3 minutes 50 seconds 417 milliseconds
    damn that was slow. Capped bhop doesn’t help.

    I am NOT playing on WON version. I just hate the high definition models.
    I actually considered playing on WON since the capped bhop bugged me so much in op4, but I guess it’ll be more fair this way. still waiting for anyone to get ONE better time than me 😛 (seriously even tough it’s not a race, that would be cool)

    That’s a weird and inexplicable way to lose your inventory lol and Barney couldn’t sound more bored.
    Is it just me or the player model slides easier in BS? could just be me coming from hl2 where you don’t always run

  10. The training course is like in Half-Life, but with guard as a hologram, which is a nice touch. It’s good to enjoy the Hazard Course architecture again, and the new place looks great.

    The jumping instead of crouching is harder due to invisible wall, but still possible.

    During the training course we notice that crowbar and scientist models look just like the old ones, but improved. It’s nice how Gearbox still retained the classic look in models while changing them.

    The crowbar has a new animation. I wonder why it always plays when level changes to target range?

    Challenge:
    Hit every target in the firing range before it starts to move backwards.

    Better than no challenges at all. Took me two tries to do it.

    Hazard Course with invisible walls.

    Got to try and catch up on this after the 3×24! I’ve never played this version of the Hazard Course before, it seems odd they’d design a new one when virtually all players would have played the other games already. It seemed really lazily made as well, with something like the ENTERING CIVILIAN AREA text more likely to be found in a mod than a commercial release! I did like the mini train ride at the end, although it made no sense.

    Maybe it’s just me, but wasn’t the HUD blue before? Is that a Steam change?
