Antagonism

for Half-Life 2

18th October 2007

About

This is a PlanetPhillip Exclusive! This mod has never been released to the public until now. It was designed as more of an engine test than a mod to be released. However, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. It offers a variety of enemies and some very well executed scripts. With a little work this could have been part of a very good mod. It includes the most intense start to a mod I can remember!

About

This is a cancelled beta and as such no guarantee is made to it working correctly. There are also engine actions that appear on the screen. There may be a way to remove them but they didn’t interfere with the gameplay so I didn’t try.

Installation

This is a cancelled beta and as such no guarantee is made to it working correctly. Copy the “anta” folder into your “SourceMods” and either start or restart Steam. It should appear in your games list. It did for me!

  1. Phillip says Play It!

First of all, don’t let the smallish file size fool you. This is a good little mod. Certainly not a Rock 24 or Metastasis but plenty of fun nevertheless. The start, as I mentioned in the introduction, is one of the most intense I can remember. The author told me the mod was very very short and after I finished the first section I thought it was almost over.

Actually it is much better than many mods that are released with a fanfare.

There’s some great scripting which add to the feeling of being involved in something bigger and the scenes hint at a deeper story. I encounter NO BUGS at all, which is really nice.

When creating the screenshots on the second run I noticed an area I didn’t see when playing so I suggest you look around carefully.

It seems that my “Type” of mod is becoming clearer to me. That is:
Not too long (Can be played in one sitting)
    Plenty of ammo and enemies
    Various enviroments
    A few surprises
    Almost no puzzles.

I have no hesitation in recommending this mod.

Mmmm, I’m not really of the same opinion here. This was clearly not fully developed. The item placement is really bad, there’s enough medicines in this mod to furnish a few large hospitals. It starts off reasonably well, but gets worse later. The rooms in the city are very barren and boring. Basically you just fight your way through rooms, streets and yards. The whole mod is packed with annoying hoppermines. Also there’s a lot of combines shooting with machine guns mounted on blue shields. That gets really old after a while. The good thing is that you can just start shooting at the gunner till he’s dead, because it doesn’t matter how much damage you take. Also I noticed that no matter where you are, if you wait long enough there’s combine coming up behind you, from areas you just cleared out. But okay, there’s no bugs and everything works well. Also in my opinion a good mod should be a mix of puzzles and fighting. I get bored very quickly if it’s all just fighting. So all in all I’d say:

  3. Kerberos

Ripper, Your review made me not download that .. =~s I was too lazy for actually downloading + wait (FileCloud @ 40KB/s…) and then put it on SourceMods or w/e, and restarting Steam… Hah! the Consider it is kind of shocking, that is.

  4. Kerberos

Off topic to Phillip: My man, are you actually using a High Res pack on your HL2? The screenshots looks sweet and the wall textures are really well made..

  5. My man, are you actually using a High Res pack on your HL2?

No, just a regular install at 1024×768 resolution.

I recommend you download this mod and try it for yourself. You might not like it but ti’s worth a try. I even uplaoded it to FileFront for you and created a new graphic. Now you owe me!

    Play It Now!

not a bad little time killer, same ol run an gun, still fun though.my fav opening to a mod was one where you start with no weapons an a few metrocops chasing you. go back on this an look around some nice areas, needs to be tweeked by one of those mapper coder persons.

  7. Fragmaster

Wow one word SubTitles for the Hearing Impaired thats a new & unique gameplay techique & should be used in future 1st person shooters.

The Gameplay was very fun alot enemies to deal with both Combine & Zombines with a moderate amount of pick-up items the levels themselves arent to much to brag about & I didnt notice any texture or graphical errors

    Pros: Non-stop-action
    Good amount of pick-up items
    Various Enemies & Allies

Cons: Landmines can be a pain
    Some Behind you fights
    No Proper Ending

  8. Play It Now!

I really enjoyed the first half of this mod – it has good action and nice mapping. The second half was a bit bland and lacklustre and while easy to go around, the hopper mines were a pain.

It’s a shame this one got cancelled as it had real potential. Despite the poor second half I still give it a

If you want to get rid of the on screen gubbins type net_graph 0.

  9. Matt Glanville

Fragmaster, the closed captions can be enabled in HL2 or any any mod in the Audio tab of the Options menu.

I’ll play this next week when I have time…

  10. Avoid It!

I played it for a few minutes then it crashed. It wasn’t appealing enough to make me start it up again.

  11. Fragmaster
    Maybe?

    DoH! oh well
But still this mini-mod has alot going for it too bad the author didnt hand it over to someone else to properly polish it & give it a proper storyline & ending.
I encountered no crash bugs when loading or installing or playing this mod.
Maybe even if the author added the Gravity Gun for those annoying LandMines we/d have a sure winner.
    Still its here

Hmmm … it seems that Tox (the developer) has actually put a lot more work into the mod than this release lets on — check out the first link above. If so, it seems to address many of the concerns voiced. Hopefully he can finalize it, because I got to the end and was disappointed and wanted more.

  13. it seems that Tox (the developer) has actually put a lot more work into the mod than this release lets on

    Yes, you are right.

At first those links didn’t work for me but that might be because I clicked them in an email. Anyway, the screenshots shows some new areas and lots of testing.

Tox, may I have persmission to host the images on PlanetPhillip within a comment in the same wya that I have posted the images in the main post?

I’m not sure how many people will visit the page.

Would you consider finishing the mod and allowing me to help promote it and release it?

I really think it’s close to being a very good mod.

I wonder how many other mods like this are sitting on somebody’s drive that we could be enjoying!

  14. tox (dev)

    mmm… circumstance is bad.

they don’t have a interest mod develop work.

and me too, currently. it’s over. really

    Play It Now!

Well I just finished it and found it to be an enjoyable little piece of fluff. No bugs encountered and although load times were about normal(meaning it took longer to load a map than to play it)it was fun. Lots of ammo and plenty of health. I have not had a chance to load the (a2a7) map yet as the a2a4 map ended without an “a5” or “a6” map to continue the sequence.
Now here is my question. If I were to change the name of a2a7 to “a2a5” will it follow the others in sequence or should I just load it from the console?
And despite the unfinished nature of the mod
I would agree with most everyone else and vote

  16. I don’t know what’s going on with this mod, but I’m stuck. I made it to a point where the apparent correct path is blocked. I opened a door, fully expecting to pass through and continue on, but the door opened to reveal bricks! And I see no other way out. If someone can advise, I’d appreciate it. But this is what I’m looking at:http://fileserver6.jpghosting.com/images/a2a40000_e53f0202cd8d952b3d02f74b998d4738.jpg

Besides that, the load times with this mod are difficult to bear. Every time I started it or reloaded a saved game, I reclined in my chair, closed my eyes, and took a break. I’ve never seen a map or mod that took nearly so long to load on my system–and I’ve played quite a few of them.

  17. Sorry, the link got messed up.

    Another Try…

  18. Oh, and what’s with the “fps” and “ping” nonsense that is constantly on screen? And the subtitles? Why? Annoying.

As far as I know, this is the end of it…

  20. Avoid It!

If that’s the end of it, then I say…

I know it is an “unfinished beta”, but it’s posted here, so…

I was hoping it was a bug or something. I’ve encountered bugs not unlike that (though admittedly not brick walls where there shouldn’t be).

  21. If that’s the end of it, then I say… AVOID IT!

I know it is an “unfinished beta”, but it’s posted here, so…

Whilst I respect everybody’s right to play and judge a map or mod as they see fit, I think you are being a little unfair.

Why exactly are you recommending players avoid it? Is it becasue you didn’t like the ending? Or just becasue it’s unfinished? Either way it is what it is and it’s better than many “finished” mods!

If you thought the gamneplay, design or something tangible was bad, then fair enough but to give it an Avoid It! recommendation just because of not being finished seems unfair.

I know I’ve repeated myself and I apologize.

  22. Play It Now!

I liked it finished or not. What was completed was well done and I’m sorry tox won’t be finishing it because it has great potential.

  23. WHilst I respect everybody’s right to play and judge a map or mod as they see fit I think you are being a little unfair.

Why exactly are you recommending players avoid it? Is it becasue you didn’t like the ending? Or just becasue it’s unfinished? Either way it is what it is and it’s better than many “finished” mods!

If you thougght the gamneplay, design or something tangible was bad, then fair enough but to give it an Avoid It! recommendation just because of not being finsihed seems unfair.

I don’t think I am being unfair at all.

I disliked the immensely-long loading times, the subtitles, and the fps/ping HUD stuff…

But the main reason I didn’t enjoy it much is, yes, because of the way it ended. (And it ended that way because it’s unfinished, so there really is no difference between saying “because of the way it ended” and “because it is unfinished”.) I wouldn’t have bothered with it had I known it ended that way. It was anticlimatic, unsatisfying, and (because I thought it was a bug rather than the end) annoying. I would have avoided it had I known… So why am I wrong to advise others to avoid it for the same reason?

I know I am less charitable than most other people. I have always been that way. Sorry if it offends you.

  24. I disliked the immensely-long loading times, the subtitles, and the fps/ping HUD stuff…

Those are valid reasons for recommending players to avoid it, but you didn’t mention those things in your comments.

So why am I wrong to advise others to avoid it for the same reason?

    That’s a fai
r point. However, surely knowing that something is unfinished before you play it changes your expectations of the mod?
If I hadn’t have known it was unfinished and reached the end I also would have been angry.

I know I am less charitable than most other people. I have always been that way. Sorry if it offends you.

I’m not offended, I just wanted to defend the mod’s honor because the Author’s English isn’t very good.

  25. Those are valid reasons for recommending players to avoid it, but you didn’t mention those things in your comments.

I did mention them: 23rd October 2007 at 7:28 pm

That’s a fair point. However, surely knowing that something is unfinished before you play it changes your expectations of the mod?
If I hadn’t have known it was unfinished and reached the end I also would have been angry.

But nowhere in the description was it mentioned that it was unfinished. It does say it’s “beta”, but that term means unpolished, not unfinished. Unfinished software is a “pre-alpha” or “alpha”. A “beta” is software that is finished but has not (necessarily) had all the problems fixed yet:

    Beta Defined

So, how was I to know it had no real ending?

  26. Not being able to preview or edit makes this tough. Sorry, it’s 5am, I’ve been up for 1.5 hours, and messed up the quote tags.

  27. I did mention them: 23rd October 2007 at 7:28 pm

Then I offer my sincere apologies.

But nowhere in the description was it mentioned that it was unfinished. It does say it’s “beta”, but that term means unpolished, not unfinished.

Yes, you are right but it does say “It was designed as more of an engine test than a mod to be released.”

So, how was I to know it had no real ending?

Again, you are right and I apologize.

Not being able to preview or edit makes this tough.

Comment previewing and editing should be available in the new theme, due shortly.

  28. Matt Glanville

When I start the mod I can’t move!

  29. You probably figured this already, Matt, you need to reconfigure the keys for movement in the Options menu.

  30. Play It Now!

I had fun playing this one even if it was unfinished the mapping was from above average quality and the even that occur where enjoyable it certainly worth the time and download so

  31. I dont remember my true name
    Play It Later

This mod is great. Altough it ends abrubtly when there is no such thing as map a2a5 (the 5th map an continuation of the game). It is an incomplete work, but still must have been difficult to built because the enemies are well placed, the Combine use good tactics and don’t look too dumb anymore, the citizens have real health now, they die with one or two shots… Wow. Its great, but as I said its undone work, It lasts around 15 minutes but it’s fun as hell while you play it.

  32. Jeff
    Maybe?

I almost bailed a few times, and now wish I had. There’s no proper ending, as you’ve no doubt read. I don’t care how much warning I get, that’s a hit in my book. The hoppers were very annoying without my trusty gravity gun, and there were far too many manhacks and combine-from-behind for me.

It’s not a horrible little mod, but future me would tell last week me not to download it. Don’t do it last week me! 🙂

  33. This also stopped working after 2010 steam updates.
    Thank you Valve.
