ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?! This was so hard. I didn’t last long before I switched to GOD MODE and then I still had trouble.

I suppose there are some players that love these types of maps but I am not one of them.

Is it possible for somebody to play on HARD and kill the Strider and destroy the two aircraft? I doubt it. Make a video if you can.

    I DARE YA!

    1. i will get back to you soon with my attempt

  2. Think Twice

First, played with GOD mode on to locate the resources.
Found the container with the best cover.
Then played in easy – lots of times. In order, took out.
The Combine, Helicopter, Gunship and Strider.
All the while chucking those pesky Roller Mines into the water
You cannot win. The Roller Mines keep spawning (I kid you not).
No win = nothing achieved, pointless.

No video, I’m never going to play this again and sorry I did in the first place.

    Sadistic mapping, no player pleasure.

So I finally got some time to play this map after poring over updates on Mod DB for the last few days.

First thing I want to mention is that I did play this on Hard Mode and I did record it and I did “beat” the map without cheating. I say “beat” because I actually died in the video, but I had cleared the map to the point of being restful. In the end, the Strider’s cannon bugged out and shot me through a series of wall. (I know it’s probably possible to kill the Strider by moving rockets to the other side of the map before engaging it with the RPG (thus triggering the cannon to fire only when you come within close range of the Strider) but I really didn’t feel like doing it after coming across so many odd bugs and layout setups.

There are a lot of bugged things going on in this level. First of all, the map is ugly. There are practically zero func_details and the textures are not aligned, etc etc etc. Second, the Strider cannon is bugged to shoot right at the player (…which is possibly not what Valve ever intended to happen?), so you die regardless unless you go to great lengths to move enough rockets to the other side of the platform for ammo’s sake.

Third, there are a myriad of smaller bugs that combine to make me hate the map. There are two mounted guns on top of the towers. They seem to have a bunch of brushes attached to them, they cannot be aimed downwards very well, and their firing sounds loop infinitely upon firing once. UGH. Next, I was unable to open the rocket crate. I pressed and pressed and it wouldn’t open. Luckily there were a ton of spare rockets laying around in that container. But, UGHHHHH, didn’t this mapper playtest at all?

This map makes me want to make an arena map that is good-looking, fun, and extremely difficult in its own right. Hmmm.

Phillip, I posted the video to my Mod DB profile for your viewing pleasure. I’m gonna experiment with linking it right here…….if it doesn’t work then navigate to my Videos tab from this link:

Hard Mode – Dooleus Arena video – joe_rogers_11155 – Mod DB

I’m thinking I should make this a regular thing. I will try to make a video of me playing on Hard Mode in the maps Phillip proclaims are the most difficult (within reason, of course). I dunno…

    1. Great video, Joe. Although the Helicopter snagging the Gunship was a bit of luck.
      Thanks for that

    Hey, it’s the author 😛
I didn’t upload this here, don’t know who did.
Sorry if you all were expecting a professional and polished map – I threw this together in a couple hours, and mostly just for fun. If you don’t enjoy playing it, I’m sorry. I have other arena-style maps that are probably better conceptualized than this one, over on fpsbanana. try this one if you like: http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/124571

I had some better maps I was working on my but my hard drive crashed 🙁

anyways thanks for the feedback, I agree this map has lots of issues but it wasn’t really finished, just an alpha upload to fpsbanana for my friends to download. hopefully this won’t turn you off from my maps forever 🙂

I’ve updated the fpsbanana page with beta 2 – fixed the rocket crate and the spawning issues (my intention was to make the combine continually spawn forever, survival-stlye). If you want to update this post with the new version, I’d appreciate it.

      1. you ought to make them keep spawning for like 10 minutes, and if I survive for 10 minutes, then it stops and then it says I WON THE GAME or something. it seems not many people like a continuous battle that never ends and doesnt have a purpose or plan. Also, I hope you fixed the strider so it doesnt shoot the cannon at the player. It’s an instant kill even if i’m standing behind cover…that was lame, is shown by the video.

        1. Dooleus

yeah I fixed that, I think that was another last minute addition I didn’t really test before uploading XD

good point about the time limit – it does get boring, fighting endless waves of enemies. for this map I might just have a set number at the start and no respawning – with the strider and heli and gunship it’s hard enough. I have plenty of other maps with endless combine assaults 😛

          1. Dooleus said “i might just have a set number at the start and no respawning”
            Now that might work!
It would be good to have this otherwise excellent arena map winnable.
I loved the Combat, great, but I like to win too, please.
