Sudden Departure

for Half-Life 2

All of your friends and family left just before the Combine arrived and took over your part of the town. They left you behind for some reason.

You wake up with just zombies and Combine as company.

Fortunately, there is your cousin’s airboat in the yard.

If only you could get it to the canals. You could probably escape that way!

What The Headcrab: Episode 009

Bet you didn’t think you would see another WTH episode! I do want to make them but it’s so hard to allocate the time.

I have a plan to do shorter weekly shows, but let’s see what happens.

Anyway, what’s been happening in the HL SP world lately?

BacktrackVille

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Welcome to the third challenge from The Hammer Cup 2016, which has a Grand Prize of a NECA Gravity Gun, plus other prizes for second and third places.

This challenge contains 12 entries all with the idea of a “backtracking” as the main theme.

One of the staple events in video games is the backtrack sequence. A part of the game where you retrace your steps in the exact location but this time something has changed.

The change can be due to new enemies, a violent explosion, time travel, new vehicles etc.

We would like you to create a map where the player interacts with an area and then has to backtrack through the same area, but the area must have changed.

The reason for the change and the exact change is entirely up to you.

Announcing the Level Design Academy Livestream

I am pleased to announce the Level Design Academy here on RTSL.

Before you get too excited, allow me to explain what it is and what its objectives are.

Overview

The LDA will be a regular live streaming event where one person teaches another how to map for the Goldsource engine – that’s for Half-Life and Opposing Force (including all the other Half-Life mods out there too, single- and multi-player), for those that don’t know.

Just like other RTSL streams, they will be announced on the Wednesday or Thursday before a week in the Weekend Livestream Schedule post.

Your father, mother and brother have been taken and “they” are coming for you next.

Can you escape through the house and attached complex?

Only time will tell.

Good Luck.

PsychologyVille – Just a Discussion

A few years ago, I read an interesting article on the BBC website about psychology and testing. I emailed the author, a university professor and suggested creating a few maps for testing purposes. I can’t remember the exact details, but video games seemed an ideal medium for the tests. Unfortunately, I never heard back from him which was a little disappointing, but there you go.

And then yesterday I read this BBC article called Why are people so gullible? and it got me thinking again.

I’m not actually proposing this Ville but I would like us to talk about potential ideas. There must be plenty of ways of introducing specific psychological concepts into maps.

Hangover

for Half-Life 2

Gordon Freeman finds himself on the sea shore with a terrible hangover.

He is surrounded by empty beer bottles a few Headcrab corpses and a bicycle.

Does not remember anything about how he got there or what happened there and the night before.

Sets off to find out and as usual gets into a bunch of “fun” activities along the way.
