Prison of Death

for Half-Life 2

31st January 2010

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

You wake up and find your cell door open. Do you sit quietly and wait for a guard or do you try and escape? Hell! What kind of stupid question is that? GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!

Of course, it’s not as simple as finding a key and walking out into the bright sunshine.

Good Luck.

  1. Phillip says Maybe

It’s hard to get too excited about this release. It suffers from the usual new mapper issues of strange rooms with very little to connect them, lots of vertical shafts, and strange lighting.

There’s not much gameplay but getting a chainsaw almost made up for it. Definitely wanted to have some fun with that but all I seemed to get was crates to smash.

Overall, a mishmash of ideas, with nothing to make it special.

  2. Play It Later

Very interesting. If I start mentioning brushes, models, or general look of the map I’ll sound too harsh I’m sure about this, but I won’t. Instead I’ll mention about how it plays. Surprisingly enough, this map is fun! I’m not joking. If you look at screenshots you’ll how bad the mapping is, when you play you’ll see more of it, map really sucks visually, but it plays really nice. This is kind of a horror map and I should admit I was quiet nervous in some parts of the game. I was thinking about what’s going on, what will happen next etc.

No, don’t think this map is good it’s not, but it gives me hope about the mapper. Probably he has concentrated on how game will play rather than how it will look and he was succesful if you ask me, I was nervous, I played the map until the end without getting bored, so what’s the problem (ah, yeah the mapping), give this map a try!

PS: As soon as map starts open console and type buildcubemaps . Obviously mapper forgot to build them. Map will look better if you do this.

  3. Maybe?

No problems with the technicalities from this player’s point of view but that’s best left for the mappers to comment.

It’s a puzzler but even this Combat grunt solved them (without help). There is a smidgeon of combat only. To call it combat is to push the word to it’s extremes of meaning.

Combat fans will not get their fix here. Not sure that the puzzlers will either – if I can solve the puzzles, who can’t!

But, there’s a very good imagination at work here. In particular, see screen shots 14 & 15 which was very sly. It’s a worth a play while eating your sandwiches at lunchtime this week.

This is not the author’s first work but it is the first released work. A good start and I hope to see more from Umono as more skills are acquired – more combat please?

  4. Think Twice

By image 4 I was getting bored.
By image 8 I took my headset off, as the sounds were getting IRRITATING.
By image 20 I quit the game, went outside and spray painted a piece of wood and sat watching it dry.

I don’t mind puzzle maps, but after getting the key (image 3) I went back through the vent and the door at the end of the room was gone!! OK, that in itself was not a puzzle but why do that??

In the toilet, the door can only be seen in the mirror (image 8 ) whats that all about, it didn’t make sense!!

As Jasper has pointed out it’s the authors first released map I wont give it an avoid it but it’s pretty close.

    1. You’re pointing out the best aspects of the map as its faults my friend. I think you should play some horror adventure games.

      1. If by “horror adventure games” you include the excellent ‘they Hunger” trilogy for the original Half life then I have played horror adventure games. I’ve also played a few others and I stand by my review comments.

To be fair to the author, I’m the first to put my hands up and say I’m not a mapper/modder but if you are saying I’ve pointed out the best aspects, the you’ve just put completely of of the genre.

        1. No, I mean real horror adventure games like Silent Hill or Resident Evil. I don’t like Half Life style action games except Half Life.

          1. Oh! I see what you mean now! games not based on Half Life. PlanetPhillip is about HL/HL2/EP1/EP2, no wonder I got it wrong, my comment was based solely on the Half Life Universe, I do humbly apologize.

By the way, I still stand by my review comments.

  5. Maybe?

Its “OK” for a short bit of puzzle play. I found it really buggy which was the main negative, shafts seemingly too small to go through, puzzles solved without knowing how (repeating activities many times didn’t do it, until time # ?).

A maybe because there was some fun and minor surprises.

  6. SPY
    Maybe?

again a real shame, becasue again this is a map from a beginner that clearly didn’t realise how much work a good map takes. because the beginning of the map is rather good, but the more you progress, the less it looks and playes. severel times I did get stuck between objects and or structure. and I believe I had to rescrue myself 3 times with noclip to be able to play on. because a trigger and or teleport didn’t work. for instance when you get in to that toilet, we’re a citizen sits behin one of the 3 toilet doors, and makes strange noices. through a window what is ment as a mirror you can suddenly see Mr Breen for a second, from there I really couldn’t find a way out. I reloaded the map twise to see if I missed something but no, no way out.

who did find its way out from here?

also was there another place we’re I couldn’t find a way out from, but I forget allready what it was. other then that I still liked some of the effects, although some of them you only could see when you looked in the right direction by accident.

all in all it’s not a great map, it’s one that you play when the’re is nothing else left to play.
not nice to say, but it’s the honest trueth,
there I give it a Maybe like most others here,
    sorry,

    leon

    1. who did find its way out from here?

      I did!
There is a door in the wall opposite to the wall you crawled throgh. You can openly see it in the mirror, see image 8
Hope that helps.

As a horror map, it doesn’t have a lot to stand out from the crowd of horror maps, but at this point, there’s little one can do to stand out. Here we see a lot of the classic “shock” horror in play.

With that in mind, it does a good job at what it’s supposed to do, which is to scare the player. There’s some creativity in play, and it will be entertaining to people that haven’t played a custom Half-life 2 map before.

Not that it doesn’t come without its flaws. It’s not well polished, and in some cases I’ve accidentally died from break-neck physics (I thought pic 28 onward was an elaborate secret as I had to manipulate a lot to avoid dying).

Regardless, it presents itself as an okay map and I can’t recommend avoiding it.

  9. Maybe?

If you’re going to make such a dark map, let me have a flashlight. If you’re not going to give me a flashlight, don’t make it so damn dark.

I thought some things were clever, like the exit from the bathroom (once I finally saw it). I didn’t really understand why the room layout changed once you got the key or the chainsaw, though–it didn’t make sense.

My frustration with the darkness sans flashlight caused me to finally give up and noclip once I missed the first jump in the parking garage. After that I also just left fullbright on.

  10. Bugs found on this map.

1st : Wall And Cells Not Fixed.
2nd : Light On Wall Bug.

    You better fix this now.

change the title to : Prison Of Scary 😀
