Below is the unedited story originally posted.
There wasn’t any epidemic in the bunker 66, the virus wasn’t turning people into zombies, there wasn’t any supernatural forces. Mold.
The mold has destroyed nearly half of Bunker 66 crew’s food supply. People almost went crazy, terrified by the prospect of starvation. Stocks of food ended up rotting or being eaten. Time passed, the food finished, the only thing remaining was water. But the mold!
People realized that it was edible, it could save them! It was able to be eaten and very nutritious. For a short period of time was the sole source of nourishment of the crew.
What was the catch?
Mold has hallucinogenic properties, and strong aesthetics. People no longer paid attention to their wounds and swim lost their senses, visions and headaches nagged them. But they could not stop eating it, still it was the only food.
There have been instances of suicide, such as individual and collective. The crew shelter for refugees and research complex called bunker 66 in two years (1943-1945) dwindled from a one thousand five hundred to seven hundred people. Approaching the end of the war, messages requesting assistance were coming in from bunker 66. The military even sent a group of soldiers, to see what was there.
The year is 1945, winter, January 13. Control squad was killed and eaten by the inhabitants of the bunker 66. The mold over the years was doing things on its own. Orders has been given. The only way out has been concreted. All the documents that can steer anyone to this place has been destroyed. Before this was made, soviet prisoners, deserters, and Jews were sent there. A thousand lives. They gave them only a modest lunch. Then exit concreting works began. When they was out of food, the ones who survived battles with the previous crew also discovered a mysterious mould … The year 1948 comes round, the war ended long time ago, the hearing about bunker 66 was lost as it was intended.
But the mold would not die. The feral were still alive, fighting each other for food. Mold anaesthetized, before anyone who is saved from death or madness realized what they made, it was already too late. Mold inquired into the human, freeloaded on them, and united with their bodies. Among the in-habitants of the bunker 66 units began to appear stronger, bigger, and more cruel than anyone could imagine. Who it didn7 kill, strengthened. The price was a free will, which, together with the progress of infection was losing. The bunker 66 became a network of tunnels and rooms full of creatures, not a bit resembling humans.
July 1951, Poland, the Sudetenland region. As a young geologist you examined the surrounding caves and rocks with a few friends. When you examined a cave one of geologists dug up an old mine. The explosion killed him and his partner, but you fell into the hole it made, passing out. You woke up among the concrete walls and wooden crates. You didn’t know where you were, didn’t know what was happening. Everything becomes clear when you landed up in store supervisor’s office. You read the notes of the last few years and then under-stood that you can expect here only death. There was no mention of concreted main gate so it didn’t abandon hope of getting out of here. You studied the map of the complex, grabbed a knife and luger. Well, you started. Next is just worse.

I absolutely loved this.
I can’t deny that I got a little frustrated with it at times, but the whole atmosphere is fantastic and anybody who loves RcTW will probably enjoy this.
The mod is missing level transitions, proper working scripts but it is definitely playable. It’s such a shame that it was abandoned.
I found it quite hard and had to use “give item_suit” at the beginning of a few levels, otherwise it was too dark and I wasn’t able to change weapons.
I don’t know where the new weapons came from but they seem very well done and neither too powerful nor not powerful enough.
The best element is the general layout and design of the levels. Coupled with the “Underground secret base” thing and I am a happy headcrab.
I really wish somebody could have turned it into a complete mod, even if it were still not finished. Oh well.
If you are comfortable with the console, play it, if not, this could be the perfect time to learn!
3 Hours, 11 Minutes
Wow, 3 hours!!
Be aware that 3 hours is over a number of sessions and includes all the console time and looking for exits etc. This mod would probably be 90 minutes long if it were finished.
Hey Phillip, I’m suffering from missing textures as early as the main menu scene. I have Ep2, Half life 2 and Source base SDK downloaded. What can I possibly require further?
Strange. When I first ran it, I had it configured for MapTap as a HL2 mod and I also had missing textures. Once I set it to be an EP2 mod (with the addition of “ep2-” in the file name, everything except the enemies machine gun was okay. Which Source Base SDK do you have downloaded? HAve you tried installing via MapTap?
I have stuck after screenshot 76 🙁 How can I reach #77? There is no way out.
I couldn’t find one either. I had to manually load the next map.
I think this could have been interesting but was a long way from being finished. I too experienced many missing textures, so many in fact it was hard to decipher where I was supposed to go. It’s worth trying if you like explore, have lots of patience, and know your console commands. I gave up during map 4 as it was just too difficult to make progress. It’s a shame the mod was abandoned because it looks like a lot of work went into it already.
This is an unfinished mod. That said on my set up it was missing too many, mainly wall textures to be playable and it was too dark for all those red glowing ‘ERROR’s. Hadn’t seen those in an age, kind of nostalgic!
To me it was too broke to play with any degree of interest, so I left it as think twice. I did manage to activate a flooded room trap even though the graphics where ‘ERROR’s the sound worked. But once the checkerboard pattern hit the invisible ceiling I drowned!
That’s clearly stated in the description.
I think you and some other users must have had some trouble. The only missing texture I had was from the machine gun, as you can see from my screenshots. I understand why you would rate it as TT, but it seems a shame because it’s not the mod’s fault.
When I loaded up the first map, it was awash with the pink-and-black textures and the red ERROR blocks. Not sure how to fix that, or if it’s worth my time, although the screens certainly seem to indicate an interesting mod behind them.
Do you have any of the SDKs installed? Have you run HL2, Ep1 and Ep1 lately.
Yeah, just reloaded both 2007 and 2013 SDKs. I also just went thru several individual HL2 and Ep2 maps (but not Ep1), as well as a bunch of mods.
Not so bad. Runs under Linux with some chrashes and a freeze. The rest is playable.
I really quite hate give Maybe? recommendations. I’ve always thought Maybe recoms are like too much in middle ground. But in this case I have to do it.
Because first of all. Here we have the classic example of a great, really great mod project, but where sadly sounds just too great, or better say, is way too ambitious to make a succesful release. That’s just a big, big shame. Because actually the playable and only maps in this unfinished mod are really great! They were pretty huge, with tons of nice looking and detailed areas to explore. Well, mapping was really good in this aborted mod, and well that’s just a pity, because here we definitely have a talented mapper that just couldn’t continue with his work and decided to release it like that.
So first if you really plan to play this one, be warned that is not a proper finished mod, and that from a gaming POV bring many troubles, some of them are basically that is a nuisance to load some maps manually, I had to do it with 2 maps. One in a failed transition between maps, and the second time, in a map where was absolutely difficult and confusing to know where that map ends and starts the next one, that map was the one where you have to get the MP-40 gun if i don’t get wrong.
Also the combat was only nice in very few parts, and like 2 or 3 times. those detailed Nazi soldiers were a great touch and new WW2 nazi weapons were just beautiful. I think those models are from the Resistance and Liberation mod, as once I heard but I’m not quite sure of it, anyway the combat was overall scarce and poor. Also installing via maptap, which is the best way to deal with the setup of this mod, I didn’t have the ERROR textures bugs, BUT the dialogues just disappeared and I couldn’t hear all the stuff the Nazi General had to say. So I absolutely didn’t understand the plot if there was one. I also have to use noclip more than 3 times because some faulty trigger issues. You know just way too much inconveniences in here for my liking.
My whole feeling after playing this one, is that mapping is 100 percent beautiful and well done, those caves are just very impressive, and I had a very intense immersion feeling inside that Bunker environment. BUT I absolutely didn’t like the gameplay, and those comprehensible nuisances an unfinished project brings. Sorry but for me this last buggy stuff outweigh the positive mapping points about it. I really don’t understand why Phillip quite liked this one as a PN, I mean sometimes he recommends lower some OK finished mods, and in this occasion, well I think he placed way too high an unfinished but “cool” project. Anyway I absolutely respect his opinion about it but in this peculiar case I don’t share it at all.
In conclusion I think we have an absolutely talented mapper here. So I recommend him, if his time permits it. to get focused in something smaller, maybe 2 of those huge beautiful maps centered in a HL2 scenario, you know, I’m only trying to say little but with that awesome detail quality would be great, instead of that huge ambitions that just crashed and burn with real life hindrances. I absolutely would love to see and play more focused mods or maps from this author. Because I know they will be good.
You know and after playing this I couldn’t help feel a bit sad B66 project was not terminated. Because I know we definitely lost a classic mod. You know only The Gate 1 and 2 are the only mods that in the HL modding platform deals and develops a WW2 related story, I just love belic history, so for me is a big shame this project is not concluded.
yeah, I know the last post is almost 5 years ago.
I played this mod 3 years ago en stopped in the beginning, noticed: bugs, bugs, bugs!
Now I thought: I give it a new try, reinstalled it (B66_ALPHA.rar) and started the mod.
– at this point I had only a few bugs AND this is really a very good mod ! ! (see the positive things Hec wrote)
A few problems:
– at the start it is too dark, you don’t have a flashlight. But I could find the generator, activated it and… fell down, dead.
It takes a few trials to know where you have to take place, entering the generator
– at the end of map 2 the map 3 wouldn’t load, so I had to load it manualy and give myself a HIV and weapons.
– map 3 is so huge that I lost my way and simply loaded map 4 manually (I suppose you have – at the end – to find ‘somewhere’ an elevator. Because there seams to be no walktrhroug on youtube, I couldn’t find any help –
– The ending is a bit strange: a loading and some music and thats it.
But after all: give it a new try !
