is this a good map cus i’ve never played it before?

  2. ThePope

Sounds like a game about 3rd battalion 505th infantry regiment 101st airborne divison. Possibly a WWII themed mod.

  3. Single map. Loads of weapons and ammo. Kill some grunts round a swimming pool. Kill some grunts on some stairs. Destroy three gun turrets and an Apache. Strong Christian messages in map and text file. Nice ambient sound from the CD. 10 minutes play on skill 3.

    Think Twice

The review link posted by Stef above calls this the ugliest lighting ever seen in a HL map, can’t argue with that, the purple lighting is a night mare. Apart from the light it’s a very basic and boxy design with Grunts arranged has piledriver explains above. There are few tough emplacement Grunts and a Gunship to deal with but the game has no depth and very little content. Play it if you must it will take a few saves to find the short cut.

  5. Maybe?

The “3rd 505th” title refers to the author’s previous battalion unit.
Quick romp through a sizable building filled with grunts, an Apache flying overhead and strange Jesus/Christian subliminal messages here and there (even in the readme).
No proper ending and no real sense of accomplishment.

  6. Think Twice

Old map with just one big room if you want, but there’s some action. Just don’t expect too much. It’s fun for 5 mins.

    Pro’s:
    -Lil gruntfest
-Lot of weapons+ammo (even at start!)
    -Almost every weapon available

    Con’s:
-Horrible, weird & very basic leveldesign & lighting
    -Dizzy Apache
    -Too dark sometimes
-No story, puzzles or something interesting
    -Very short

3rd505th is a one-level pack by author Jim Donovan. The title refers to the author’s former Army unit, the 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Reading that, you might guess that this map is chock full of combat. Well, it’s got some, and that’s all it’s got going for it.

This short map sports quite possibly the ugliest lighting ever in a Half-Life map. As you can see from the screenshots, the entire level is bathed in a hideous purple light. The architecture leaves much to be desired as well. The map is very boxy and plain, with no details whatsoever. Even with such a plain design, the r_speeds are way up there for much of the map, due to the fact that the entire level is contained in one huge box, which, if you are at all familiar with HL mapping you’d know, is a big no-no. In short, nothing about this map is the least bit attractive.

This map is a gruntfest, plain and simple. There is an Apache at the end to spice things up but it never even attacks you if you shoot it from where you first see it. The weapons available to you at the start are a combination of long-range (crossbow and the .357) and explosives. The two ranged weapons make it awfully easy to take out all the foes from a safe distance. There is one tough part, in which you must ascend a staircase with a bunch of grunts with grenades waiting for you. However, a little exploration reveals a much easier and safer approach to this area. So even the combat is a letdown.

The oddest thing about 3rd505th (once you adapt to the heinous purple lighting, that is) is the prevalence of religious symbols. There is a “Jesus Rules!” semi-subliminal message to you at the start of this pack, a cross carved into a wall, and an unstoppable mystical glass cross that moves around and around in a rectangular path. Though that mystical cross did manage to crush a couple of grunts for me.

This one’s a turkey. It isn’t pretty, the combat is pretty boring and easy, there is no proper ending, and did I mention it isn’t pretty? Stay away. Far away.

  8. Avoid It!

Definitely someone’s first map. The mapping is very boxy, the map itself is even surrounded by an even bigger box with no lighting which you can fall off into and die, for some reason. You fight grunts and sentry turrets scattered throughout a few rooms, which ends with a fight against an apache. The map that isn’t covered in darkness is illuminated by a purple light that could be considered obnoxious. There is nothing else of note within the map other than a glass cross that floats around a path and slowly kills some grunts.

It’s playable for sure but I don’t see any reason to do so unless you’re bored

  9. Maybe?

On hard difficulty. The final helicopter resist clearly one rocket launcher shot and force you to climb to the roof top and launch a grenade from your Assault Rifle which is quite dangerous because you might get killed in the chopper dropping blast. It’s the last enemy anyway. There’s nothing else to do after. Mine grenades has no use at all.
Ambient. This pink-violet background do not mix too much with Jesus stuff in the middle. I feel like dancing in the disco with the Jesus and at the same time there’s war in the middle. Beside the roof top has almost no light at all, it’s like walking in the black desert and if you step on any ledge, you just fall down and quickly die in there. He could place some protection to the roof top at least like a balcony.
