Jim’s Rules Of Half Life 2 Mapping

For those not following Jim Partridge’s RTSL livestream event, called Critical Jim, he plays and dissects a different mod every month.

He normally has a guest to throw and crush ideas around.

Here are his starting mapping rules. Don’t be surprised if they get added to and/or updated as he finds new elements to discuss.

Announcing a new Event: Critical Jim

Approximately once a month, Jim Partridge will play and deconstruct a mod from a designers point of view.

Each mod will be livestreamed on the RTSL Twitch channel and Jim will be explaining how the mod he is playing has made some questionable design decisions. There is a good chance that for many streams, James will have a Devil’s Advocate to counter his observations.

He will always be polite and try to be as fair as possible with his criticism and he will be focussed more on what we can learn rather than criticising the mapper directly.

Hell he may even use his maps at some point and invite someone else to critique it.

Will you agree with him? Only one way to find out and that’s to watch.

Every few months a podcast will be recorded discussing the mods that have been deconstructed.

The event is called Critical Jim.

This is another opportunity to play something you may have missed or replay something with a new perspective.

DiamondDogsVille

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Single Player First Person Shooter Maps and Mods for Half-Life 1, 2 and Episodes 1, 2 and 3

For this competition, entrants had to create an area from which the player must escape.

This “Escape” is most probably accomplished through the solving of some puzzle and/or combat.

The area can be a room, a series of rooms or even outside. The concept is that the player must find a way to move outside of the area.

I was hoping for some clever puzzles, hopefully environmental in nature and not some obscure and impossible to solve button pressing sequence.

This mod contains 3 official entries, one extra entry and a bonus map made over a longer time period.

Deep Down

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Firmly sticking to the Half Life 2 formula, Deep Down is a new entry in the story of Alyx and Gordon as they continue the hunt for Combine Advisors in the area surrounding White Forest.

Combine Forces, Zombies and Antlions lie between them and the brooding menace deep below the earth that will test both their skills further than ever before.

If you miss the Half Life 2 formula and are tired of waiting patiently for Episode 3 then this mod is for you. Featuring new gameplay elements, fiendish puzzles and blistering action, Deep Down will provide your Half Life 2 fix (well some of it at least).
