I. General Game Info

          A. Summary & System Requirements

Todesangst 2: der echte Feind (T2DEF) is a single player modification for Valve Software's game Half-Life.  You must have a retail copy of Half-Life to install and play T2DEF (note: Counterstrike WILL NOT suffice).  There is no supported multiplayer mode for T2DEF.

T2DEF has been tested on Half-Life version 1.1.1.0; it may work on versions back to 1.1.0.8.  As a feature rich modification, the minimum system requirements that apply for Half-Life also apply for T2DEF with the following additions:

-3D accelerator video card with a minimum of 4MB of texture memory AND an OpenGL supported resolution of 800x600 minimum.  T2DEF contains volumetric fog in some maps which is not supported by software mode or by Direct3D.  These maps will not look right if not played in OpenGL mode.  In addition, the custom graphics will not be displayed correctly at resolutions below 800x600.

-Multichannel 16-bit sound card.  Needed to support playback of the MP3 soundtracks.

B. Story

In the original Todesangst edition (spoiler alert for those who haven't played it yet!), we learn about Dr. Jack Newell and his horrifyingly successful endeavors to merge Xen and human life.  Gordon Freeman nearly falls victim to an assassination attempt engineered by Dr. Newell, causing Gordon to reassume his adventurer role and track down Dr. Newell.   During the hunt, Gordon encounters Joe, a courageous member of the Black Mesa security force.  Together they hunt down Dr. Newell and eventually succeed in smashing his biological engineering plots.  The scheming doctor ironically meets his doom via his own diabolical creation, the "molecular transmutator".  Joe activates the control console to transform Dr. Newell into a vicious Xenantromorph.  Fade to black - roll the credits - end of story . . .or so we thought!

The story of Todesangst 2: der echte Feind (T2DEF)  further develops the internal Black Mesa conspiracy and the human/Xen biological engineering theme.  Dr. Newell was the genius mind behind the experimentation and development of the Xenanthromorph program, but unfortunately as in any complex secret collusion, the problem is much worse that it initially seems.  The true power behind the clandestine research is a multi-national anarchistic group called Schwarzgeist.  During the construction of the Black Mesa compound they began to secretly infiltrate the organization.  By the time of the first successful retrieval of biologic matter from Xen, Schwarzgeist personnel were in key scientific positions.  They managed to keep their identity secret until an inadvertent exposure during the resonance cascade disaster and ensuing containment revealed their existence.

Although top Black Mesa management and the NSA are now aware of their presence, their true objectives remain a mystery.  Intelligence gathering efforts have been hampered by Schwarzgeist's efficient and airtight organization.  In fact, Dr. Newell was not a known member of the group until his attempt on Gordon Freeman's life.  His human/Xen DNA decoding project and "molecular transmutator" equipment were skillfully disguised as pharmaceutical research.  As the story of T2DEF unfolds, Gordon will soon discover just how deep their influence and control of Black Mesa personnel has gone . . . .

II Configuration

A. In-Game Configuration Menu

During game play, you can bring up the configuration menu by pressing the TAB key.  Changes made here will be retained with a saved game.

MP3 Playback

T2DEF contains many MP3 music tracks that are played during strategic portions of the game.  The playback of these tracks is turned ON by default.  To disable MP3 playback, click on the "Disabled" button.  To re-enable MP3 playback, click on the "Enabled" button.

Caption Language

Most of the third person cinematic cut scenes in the game contain text dialogue that will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.  The default language for the captions is English.  To change the language to German, or to disable the text captions, click on the appropriate button.

III New Features

A. Weapons and Items

      Hatchet

The standard crowbar has been replaced by a hatchet.  This small axe melee weapon works the same as the crowbar with one important difference: you now have a secondary attack mode.  When you use the secondary attack mode (right mouse button by default), you will throw it in the direction you are facing.  It will spin and arc through the air just like a real projectile, so some practice will be needed to judge the angle of your toss to hit targets.  Monsters will take severe damage from a thrown hatchet, often rendering a fatal attack with just one shot.  The hatchet may be picked back up and reused after your toss, provided you don't throw it away down a shaft or lob it up onto a shelf!  You can carry only one hatchet at a time, so if you lose it you're out of luck unless you can find another one.

      Antitoxin

During your adventure you risk being poisoned by powerful Xen neurotoxins.  Your hazard suit provides some protection, but for maximum resistance the suit medical system can be augmented by vials of antitoxin.  One vial provides four antitoxin inoculations, which the suit voice system will inform you when are administered (and when your supply is exhausted).  Your suit can carry a maximum of four inoculations.

    B. Allies

      Walter Guthrie

Position: Section Head, Anomalous Materials, Sector A.
Education: PhD Quantum Physics MIT, special research in theoretical transdimensional teleportation
Background: Dr. Guthrie was the first Black Mesa associate to successfully complete a round trip teleportation to the Xen universe.  Many of the cataloged Xen specimens bear his impromptu identification nomenclature, such as the "headcrab".  Under his direction the second generation of teleporters were recently completed.

      Albert Jones

Position: Senior Staff Scientist, Regenerative Biology Division, Sector A.
Education: PhD Molecular Biology with specialization in gamma absorption tendencies of cellular protoplasm and autonomous mitochondria replication.
Background:  Skilled in the analysis of biological phenomena, Dr. Jones has greatly expanded the body of knowledge regarding Xen life forms.  Somewhat aloof, but generally an amiable personality.

      Oscar Kaufmann

Position: Senior Staff Scientist, Xenomorph Studies, Sector D
Education: PhD Theoretical Physics, Rutgers University, special research in multidimensional subspace instabilities
Background: Originally a key part of the Anomalous Materials studies group, Dr. Kaufmann was recently reassigned to Xenomorph Studies after certain personality clashes with other staff members.  His abrasive personality is mostly offset by his incisive analytical thinking.

      Sanjay Kumar

Position: Senior Staff Scientist, Quantum Materials, Sector D
Education: PhD Quantum Physics MIT, specialized research in multiphase inertial field dampening
Background:  With his superb analytical skills, Dr. Kumar has succeeded in answering critical metallurgical questions on Xen matter that were previously thought to be unsolvable.  He is currently assisting Dr. James Newell with his research into pharmacological nutrients in Xen tissues.

      Lukas Wechsler

Position: Director of Operations, Sector D
Education: PhD in Theoretical Physics, UIUC, special research in antimatter fusion reactions.
Background: Dr. Wechsler is one of the original eight members of the Black Mesa research staff, joining the project after spending 15 years performing classified research for NASA on matter/anti-matter reactions.  Dr. Wechsler was recently promoted to Director after successfully reversing the resonance cascade failure.

      Ethan Cooke

Position: Research Associate Intern, Interstellar Topology, Sector D
Education: Mphys. University of Oxford, PhD candidate University of Birmingham
Background: Mr. Cooke is a visiting graduate student finishing his last year of study via Black Mesa's international exchange program.  Sharp and inquisitive, Mr. Cooke is highly skilled in problem solving and research.

      Reginald "Joe" Williamson

Position: Level 3 Security Officer, Sector D
Education: Associates Degree, Criminal Justice, John Smith College
Background: Mr. Williamson, known by his co-workers by his preferred nickname "Joe", has received three commendations for integrity and duty.  Although somewhat average in technological aptitude and prone to procedural fixations, his superior interpersonal skills have helped him become one of the most competent security officers within Black Mesa.

    C. Monsters and Enemies

      Schwarzgeist Troopers

These are a mixed lot of mercenaries hired by Schwarzgeist command.  Their primary method of attack is with shotguns and crossbows, but be prepared for any possibility!

      Schwarzgeist Scientist

The troopers are not the only ones packing iron in the Schwarzgeist organization - even their researchers are armed.  In this case, these men are equipped with a 15 round semiautomatic weapon.  Being non-combatants their aim and accuracy is average at best and they are not issued extra ammunition; however, they are loyal to the death to the Schwarzgeist cause and can be counted on to use suicidal measures to thwart any threat.

      M450 Robot Laser

Intended for use by the Black Mesa construction crew for rapid tunneling and rock cutting, the Schwarzgeist troopers commandeer them for use as offensive weapons.  Equipped with a 100kW mining laser, the M450 can efficiently slice through rock, steel, and, of course, flesh.  Their titanium and stainless steel superstructure renders them impervious to gunfire.  Either use explosives to disable them or hit the operator with a skilled shot.

      Macrobrachius

A slow moving denizen of the Xen universe, he makes up for a lack of mobility with a devastating long range ballistic attack.  At closer ranges, he can choose between multiple arc paths for his attack, sometimes launching a line-of-sight projectile, sometimes launching a high arc projectile.  Or, he can launch a pair of projectiles, one high and one low that both hit the target at the same time for a double whammy!  At close range he is capable of a vicious tentacle whip attack.

      Chumtoad

Recently discovered is the lowly Chumtoad.  Usually found in packs, these small creatures are armored with three poisonous spines on their backs that they use to puncture their enemies during a somersault attack.  Once killed, their poison producing nematocysts erupt, creating a toxic cloud.  Fortunately, Black Mesa biologists have already developed an antidote that is stored in your HEV suit.  It must be refilled via antidote packs, however, if used excessively.

      Mutant Rat

An unfortunate side effect of the experimentation within Black Mesa was the creation of a species of giant rat.  This new rodent developed from the common Norway rat after they inevitably infested the nuclear storage facility.  Reports indicate they have mutated as well, now having phosphorescent eyes.  Biting appears to be their only method of attack, but with jaws the size of a German shepherd it is best to avoid interactions with them.

      Bloater

These creatures were just recently discovered during exploration of new regions of Xen space.  Generally passive and non-aggressive, they tend to hover near ground level in flocks while feeding on airborne microorganisms.  However, for reasons not yet fully understood, they are overly sensitive to the energy signatures of our HEV suits, to the point where they blindly attack and explode at close range to them, similar to the "snark" species.  Modifications have been started on our HEV suit inventory to rephase the energy frequencies; however, many suits have not yet been upgraded.  Caution is strongly advised if you encounter this species.

      Kamov Ka-50 attack helicopter

The preferred airborne offensive weapon of the Schwarzgeist, the Ka-50 is a devastating adversary.  Developed by the former USSR, the Ka-50 saw very limited use until the Schwarzgeist contracted with Belarus to manufacture a small fleet of them.  The Ka-50 is equipped with a 30mm rapid fire cannon.

    D. Cinematic Cut Scenes with Text Dialogue

Cut scenes which contain information critical to the plot development will display the text dialogue of the characters at the bottom of the screen.  This dialogue can be presented in either English or German, or not displayed at all, depending on the configuration setting (see Section II.A.2)

    E. Remote Security Cameras

Located throughout the game are Security Consoles of various design.  A ubiquitous feature on these consoles is a bank of one or more monitors displaying the image from a respective remote security camera.  By approaching a console and pressing the "use" key, you can view the action through the cameras.  Click on the "Prev" and "Next" buttons to cycle through the array of cameras connected to the console.  Click on the "Exit" button when finished.

    F. Hazard Course & Easter Eggs

Select the "Hazard Course" option at the main Half-Life menu to play through a short map illustrating the new security camera and throwable hatchet features.  As an added bonus, there is a special room you can access with a five-digit secret code.  This special room contains a highly detailed and fast action shooting gallery where you can really cut loose on the Xen monsters!

The digits for the secret code are found one at a time, in special "secret areas" within the main T2DEF game.  They are areas in the map that are moderately difficult to find, but do not require special jumping skills, breaking objects, finding hidden doors, or other irritating actions.  Each secret area contains bonus weapons or other items.  Just walk around and explore each map - and good luck!

IV. Troubleshooting

If you are having problems while attempting to run T2DEF, MAKE SURE YOUR VERSION OF HALF-LIFE IS UP TO AT LEAST 1.1.1.0.  If it is, and you are still having problems, see the list of known issues below.  For the most up-to-date status on reported issues and patches refer to the on-line forums at www.peppyfool.com/forum/

1. The game crashes with a "This application has generated an error and will be terminated" error message.
The most likely cause known at present is due to the MP3 player code.  If you can click on the "details" button, it usually shows that "fmod.dll" was the culprit.  Fmod is generally very stable but has been reported to be sensitive to some hardware combinations and overclocked CPU's.  Try disabling the MP3 playback (see Section 2.A. above) to see if that corrects the problem on your machine.
